Support the Campaign for Peace and Democracy in 2011!

December 2010

Dear Friend of the Campaign for Peace and Democracy,

Now is the time to intensify the campaign to stop U.S. aggression against Iran, and to show support for those courageously struggling for their democratic rights within Iran. To help the Campaign for Peace and Democracy play its part in this and other campaigns, please consider giving us your financial support. Tax-deductible contributions of any size are welcome and very much needed.

We are currently gathering signatures on a public declaration entitled “End the War Threats and Sanctions Program Against Iran; Support the Struggle for Democracy Inside Iran” already signed by hundreds of individuals. We have run ads with the statement in several publications, including The Nation and The Progressive, and it has been posted on many websites and listserves.

We continue to gather signatures on the declaration and will soon send statement and the names of signers to the White House, members of Congress, and officials in Iran. To see the emerging list of signatures or to add your name, please go to https://cpdweb.org/stmts/1015/stmt.shtml

In addition to our ongoing work on Iran, we plan to continue campaigning to bring all U.S. forces home from Afghanistan and Pakistan, and for an immediate end to the murderous U.S. drone attacks in those countries and Yemen. In Afghanistan, the corrupt Karzai government is inextricably tied to warlords and drug lords, whose violence, cruelty and misogyny offer no real alternative to the Taliban. Americans are increasingly fed up with our government's unjust and extravagantly expensive support for these brutal, reactionary elements, and we intend to promote active opposition to the Af/Pak debacle in every way we can.

Over the past year CPD has launched or actively supported vigorous campaigns on several key issues:

  • Fundraising for a Pakistan Labor Appeal for Emergency Flood Support.
  • Publicity for the campaign of left groups in Pakistan calling for a cancellation of Pakistan's debt and a redirection of the enormous resources wasted on the criminal wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • A call to our supporters to urge members of Congress to vote against the Afghan war supplemental funding.
  • A widely publicized sign-on declaration calling for the withdrawal of all U.S. and NATO forces from Afghanistan and Pakistan now.
  • Participation in the anti-drone demonstration at CIA headquarters called by Cindy Sheehan.
  • Participation in the October 2 Washington D.C. for jobs and education, noting the connection of these issues to the need for a peaceful U.S. foreign policy.
  • An open letter of solidarity to Egyptian labor protestors facing brutal repression.
  • Signature gathering for the Continental Campaign Against Military Bases statement protesting the establishment of U.S. military bases and U.S. efforts to impose neoliberal economics in Latin America.
  • Support for the protest against the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla.
  • Support of the people of Haiti after the earthquake, noting that "We need to state clearly and firmly now that we oppose the U.S. military occupation of Haiti.”
  • Support for democratic activists in Iran and opposition to U.S. military attacks or economic sanctions on Iran.

Taken together, these initiatives embody CPD's view that the way to build an alternative to war is through promoting solidarity among movements for peace, human rights and social justice across national boundaries.
